Will iPhone OS 4.0 Finally Bring Background Apps?

With the tablet and iPhone OS 4.0 being likely to be both announced at Apple’s January 27 event, TechCrunch is theorizing that we might see the arrival of background apps. They argue that the tablet will need to be able to run multiple apps at the same time, to make it a serious device. Given its theorized hardware, this shouldn’t be a technical limitation. If the Tablet runs iPhone OS, as many theorize, then it would make sense for the iPhone to get the ability to run more than one app at a time.

Keep in mind, that one of the reasons many thought that background apps were kept out of the iPhone originally was because they absolutely murdered the battery life. If this feature does arrive, it might significantly reduce talk time.
