Square App Will Cost $1 With Free Dongle

We’ve covered the Square POS system before, a small headphone dongle which its creators hope will let you use your credit card if a far wider range of locations. While concrete information on the product is still scanty, we’ve finally heard word of the price, and its left us scratching our heads a little.

According to iPhone Valley, the app itself will only cost $1, and the dongle will be free. That’s right, gratis. Instead, Square will charge a 2.9% transaction fee, and will run through any bank account. They say it could launch at any point between April and July.

I’m slightly incredulous about the free hardware. If this information is correct, it’s a huge drawcard. Even ith the 2.9% fee, it would be worth picking up the reader. Hell, use it once and you’ve already paid back the investment. With a price that low, it will be accessible to any merchant at all. Maybe I should pick it up to invoice my editors…
