On Text Entry And Tablets

If the tablet is going to have serious chops as a work device, one of the big questions about it is how it’s going to handle text input. Dan Moren at MacWorld has a breakdown of some of the different ways Apple might handle it, and his views on the odds.

This is actually a really big issue for anyone considering using one of these tablets for heavy work. You can’t just use a virtual keyboard for fast, consistent typing. You end up hitting the surface hard and repeatedly, damaging your fingertips. Plus, there’s no feedback for getting your fingers in the right place. Any path Apple goes down with this is going to have to diverge from the iPhone model substantially. I’m hoping bluetooth keyboard support actually exists for this device, as that way you can do light text entry via the screen, but for heavier stuff you can bust out a dedicated device.
