Mauritius Has iPhone—But No iTunes Store
The small island nation of Mauritius just gained the iPhone, and apparently it’s selling like hotcakes. The only problem? No iTunes store. Man, that’s just evil. Can you imagine, all the hype, all the stories floating around about cool new apps, and you finally get your hands on an iPhone, only to find you can’t access any of that? It’s enough to make someone jailbreak. The campaign to get the iTunes store up in Mauritius is being organized by iPhone sellers Paoma.
Apparently this issue exists in a number of other locations as well, as the readers from TUAW have chimed in. Singapore, Kenya, Bulgaria, Poland, no videos in Sweden, no music or videos in Argentina, etc. Apple isn’t exactly known for being internationally friendly (cf markups on Apple hardware in various locations), but I didn’t realize quite how far behind the iTunes store was running.
