iPhone 3GS Disappoints Repair Company

Were you one of the millions who stood in line to buy the new iPhone 3GS on opening weekend? A representative from an Austin based iPhone repair company joined the millions on opening day and had a totally different shopping experience than expected. A quick trip to the local AT&T store brought no long lines or hoopla… strange.

Taking a closer look at what the iPhone 3GS has to offer, the new model is a definite improvement over the first edition iPhone 2G model. However, what has proved disappointing is in comparing the new iPhone 3GS with its predecessor, the iPhone 3G. The 3G and 3GS models are almost identical except for a few modified parts. The two are so similar, in fact, that Apple doesn’t even put the “S” on the back casing! It appears Apple added the extra memory, upgraded a few items, and called it “3GS“. Should more be expected of Apple?

Further analysis of the new iPhone 3GS reveals that, although the same iPhone accessories are used for both the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS models, they do not use the same iPhone parts internally. There are some iPhone parts that are interchangeable, but for the big-ticket items, they are different. The new iPhone LCD and digitizer look the same, but have smaller connections. OEM’s are trying very hard these days to change up parts on each gadget they come up with so they can keep the out-of-warranty repair guys on their toes and keep the revenues in their pockets! When a consumer repairs a device without going through the manufacturer, OEM loses money… that’s a fact!

All in all, if you want to get rid of your iPhone 2G and upgrade to the iPhone 3GS… take the plunge. However, if you are planning on upgrading from the iPhone 3G to an iPhone 3GS, it is recommended that you stick with your 3G until Apple comes out with a new design and/or more features. From an iPhone repair standpoint, repair companies love the 3GS, as it is expected to break just the same as the 3G series. The iPhone 2G was built better for rough use, so be careful. Come on Apple, don’t you think it’s time to “Wow” us again with a new slick looking, feature-packed phone?
