iPad Demand Beats Out Original iPhone
An analysis undertaken by RBC Capital Markets looked at a ChangeWave survey of over 3,200 respondents, offering their views on the iPad.
While their might be some issues with self-selection bias, the study reveals some interesting features of the consumer reaction to Apple’s device.
When compared to the original iPhone, 13% of respondents were likely to purchase one, as opposed to 9%. I think that this had to do with the success of the iPhone, and Apple’s transition to being a well known mobile device maker. The iPad will have an interface and feel that people are already comfortable with, which also helps.
When asked which model they plan on picking up, the most popular versions were the extremes: the least and most expensive models. It seems the budget conscious have latched on to the 16GB Wi-Fi model, which will go for $500, and those that want a fuller functioned device are aiming at the top-of-the-line 64GB 3G version. No one wants the 64GB Wi-Fi version it seems.
The iPad seems to be cannibalizing Apple’s other sales, as people who plan on buying the tablet are delaying other purchases to get the iPad first. 25% of those who are planning on purchasing the iPad said they would delay buying other Apple products because of it, with MacBooks, iPhones and iPods bearing the brunt of the response.
