Greenpeace Pleads To Apple Over Ecological Impact Of iPad And Cloud Computing

Greenpeace released a statement today, criticizing Apple over the carbon footprint created by the iPad’s reliance on the cloud. What their argument boils down to, is that the server farms required for much of the mobile computing that will be required by iPad users has a significantly higher carbon footprint than previously estimated. On the eve of the launch of the iPad, our latest report warns that the growth of internet computing could come with a huge jump in greenhouse gas emissions. We follow the data streams back to the data centers providing a cautionary tale about how the boom could see internet servers become a major cause of climate change. But it doesn’t have to be that way: The great innovators of the digital age can and should be leaders in promoting an energy revolution.

They also make clear that they’re “not picking on Apple”, but this is a major problem for devices such as this, and Apple has made moves to become a greener company in the past. Since the server farms require such a huge amount of power, the ecological flow-on effect is significant.
