FCC Worried About iPad’s Bandwidth Impact
The FCC has put out a warning in response to the iPad, that the device might prove popular enough to heavily congest 3G networks. Phil Bellaria, Director, Scenario Planning, and John Leibovitz, Deputy Chief, Wireless Telecommunications Bureau with the FCC put up a post on the official Broadband Government blog, saying
“With the iPad pointing to even greater demand for mobile broadband on the horizon, we must ensure that network congestion doesn’t choke off a service that consumers clearly find so appealing or frustrate mobile broadband’s ability to keep us competitive in the global broadband economy. “
The pair liken the current situation to the network woes that arose after AOL allowed unlimited usage in 1996.
AT&T have said that they can handle the network strain of the iPad’s data requirement, but the FCC is obviously worried, most likely due to the teleco’s recent well-publicized troubles with network coverage.
