Court Okays Class Action Against AT&T, Apple

In 2007, soon after the original iPhone launched, a group of users filed a suit against AT&T and Apple alleging monopoly abuse by the companies. A federal judge in California has just okayed the class action suit, which is based on the fact that Apple secretly made an exclusive deal with AT&T for five years, so even though when customers bought an iPhone, they assumed they would only be stuck with AT&T for two years, as per their contract, they were instead stuck for the length of the exclusivity details. So you thought you could ditch Ma Bell after two years, but you’re actually stuck with them for five.

In 2008 the complaint was amended to include Apple locking the phones, so no other network could be used.

The lawsuit seeks to stop Apple from selling locked iPhones in the USA, and from “determining what iPhone programs people can install.”
