AT&T Kills Unlimited Data, Adds Tethering [UPDATED]
Well, it finally happened. AT&T has added tethering support, but killed unlimited data plans. In its place are two grossly inferior options. Previously, you could get unlimited data for $30 a month, and on the iPad 250MB for $15. The new plans will only affect new customers (or people getting new contracts) from June 7. For data, there are two options:
- DataPlus gives you 200MB for $15 per month, then $15 for 200MB beyond that
- DataPro is 2GB for $25, then $10 per gigabyte after that
AT&T has finally rolled out tethering, and unsurprisingly it’ll cost extra. That’s right, to use your own data plan on more than one device is $20 per month, and it only works with DataPro.
Suddenly, I find myself hoping for a Verizon iPhone more and more. The June 7 roll out date means that the next iPhone will doubtless launch then.
UPDATE: AT&T has mentioned on their Facebook page that you will be able to retain your unlimited plan with a new iPhone.
The good news for current customers who love their unlimited plan is this: they are not required to switch, even when it’s time to upgrade to a new phone. So you are welcome to keep your unlimited plan

However, you will not be able to tether if you stay on unlimited. [via Macrumors]
