Apps of the Week, March 5th, 2010
In this edition of Apps of the Week, we use our iPhones to keep tabs on the sleeping baby in the other room, sound off with the one and only Mr. T, and shake our heads at one app’s attempt to help guys “get lucky” with a laughably shameful promo video.

Bottoms Up
Price: $0.99
Before you check out the video and scrunch that brow, let us just say that morals aside, this is a pretty fun app. It consists of a few games, like successfully sliding a beer bottle across a bartop without spilling it and also chugging a beer at the right pace without doing it so quickly that you pass out. So, that said, here’s the catch: The app comes from Team Jyker, who are trying to help you get lucky with the ladies at this fictional bar by training you on being suave (i.e. impressing the ladies by sliding a beer across the bar) and…getting you drunk enough to ignore how “ugly” they are. As if the premise alone weren’t enough to enduce an eyeroll, Team Jyker made a little video to walk you through how it works. We’ll let the video speak for itself, but we will predict that the sh-t is probably going to hit the fan once the lady blogs find out about this gem of an iPhone app.
*Soundboard App of the Week*
Mr. T – Come on Foo!
Price: $0.99

Our favorite soundboard app to come out this week is unquestionably this one featuring the best quips from the best A-Teamer, Mr. T. Of course, you get the no-brainers like “I pity the foo!” but you also get some very appropriate photos of Mr. T with each sound byte to marvel at as you listen.
Video Girl Interactive Tic Tac Toe
Price: $0.99

We’re always on the lookout for a great, somewhat mindless, interactive game app to play while we commute or pass the time on our lunch break. So this fun take on the classic tic tac toe game caught our attention. Instead of playing against the same old faceless computer, watch as the “video girl” actually points and selects boxes to check. She is wearing a lovely princess dress in the app—probably in an effort to survive the App Store Sex Massacre—but we can’t guarantee you won’t get distracted and make a wrong move.
GameSpot
Price: FREE

We’re a little surprised GameSpot didn’t have an app before, but, man, we’re glad they have one now. The GameSpot app has an extensive library of video games with trailers, gameplay videos, photos, reviews, and news. But the best part? You can watch videos while browsing other content in the app. Winner!
Rayman 2: The Great Escape
Price: $6.99

If you’re a gamer you’ve probably been sucked into the Rayman games for Playstation at one point or another. The graphics are solid and colorful, and the game is simple, jolly good fun. The new iPhone app doesn’t disappoint either, with 45 environments in 3D and a great interface that won’t crash on you. The graphics translate well to the app, and the thing actually works, which is more than we can say for Assassin’s Creed II, which was also released as an iPhone app this week.
CriBaby
Price: FREE

Moms and dads have all been there—you’re at a friend’s house or traveling away from home with the baby and you realized you don’t have your baby monitor with you (or you just didn’t want to lug around two huge walkie-talkie devices). This app skips a step and turns your iPhone into a handy baby monitor that you’re guaranteed to always have with you. You do need two iPhones, both with the app on them of course, as you keep one phone near the baby and the other with you to synch up the audio feed. You can also mute the receiver and just watch the graphics or wait for vibrations to monitor your baby’s noise level. We love apps that functional and incredibly helpful, overall, and this is a functional, helpful app if we’ve ever seen one.
Attic ~ Music Controller for Forgotten Albums in Your iTunes Library
Price: $0.99

If you find yourself in a music rut, playing the same songs and artists over and over from your iTunes, give this app a try. Attic finds the music in your iTunes that hasn’t gotten much airplay lately and shuffles them in your “attic.” You can also create playlists and shuffle through the music Attic finds, though that would kind of miss the whole point of the app, right?
SnapMe
Price: $0.99

There are plenty of photography apps with “big button” features that help you take a self- or group portrait more easily without fearing dropping your phone while holding it at that funny angle. But the SnapMe goes a little further with just a few extra, yet very useful, features. Use the grid on the screen when the app is in camera mode to figure out where to place your fingers to get a steady grip on your iPhone. With your middle finger “hovering” over the capture button, you can get your iPhone into position and the app will make your iPhone vibrate to let you know that you’re safe to shoot away.
MLB.com AtBat 2010
Price: $14.99

Yes, it’s a very hefty price for an iPhone app, but when it comes to the hardcore baseball fan, there’s no price for on-the-go live video and updates on your favorite team. This is the pro version, which offers a gaggle of features like live video beginning in mid-March, spring training stats and live audio, a video library, and more video options. The lite version is free but only offers news and text updates without video, much less live video. Baseball season starts soon—batter up!
