Apps of the Week, February 5th 2010
In this edition of Apps of the Week, we sound off with the infamous characters of FX’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and we search the globe for Vienna Beef hot dogs, public toilets, and Walmart parking lots.

DutyWatch Remote for iPhone
Price: FREE

Micromanage, much? This app is borderline overbearing, as it allows managers and bosses to monitor their employees’ computer usage and track things like their key strokes, programs, app usage, and switches, as well as capture screenshots of their employees’ monitors. As much as we are perplexed at why a boss would feel the need to use one of these programs, the fact that it is possible, and for free, for that matter, is pretty incredible.
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Soundboard
Price: FREE

Fans of FX’s hilariously politically incorrect show It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia will revel in this soundboard app’s random yet golden sound clips pulled from the show. Tap on one of the character’s heads to hear a beloved quote. Sometimes you’ll get the same quote back-to-back, but keep tapping—there are literally dozens of them to be heard and loved all over again.
This American Life
Price: $2.99

We reviewed this app just yesterday but had to reiterate its awesomeness. The mega-popular NPR radio narrative show released an app this week that stores a full archive of all of the “TAL” shows, dating back to 1995, as well as some other content and extras. Check out the review for all of the details.
Vienna Beef Hot Dog Stand Locator
Price: FREE

One thing is for certain: People do not kid around with their Vienna Beef hot dogs. This app gets down to business by listing all of the locations of vendors in your area that sell authentic, Chicago-style Vienna Beef hot dogs. You can also get directions to the dog stands, call them directly from the app, visit their websites, and add them to your “contacts” list. And, if you’re not already a Vienna expert, you can even brush up on your Vienna Beef history.
Find Toilets
Price: $0.99

It may not be completely available in all of the U.S. yet, but it’s getting there. And that’s good enough for us. This app will use the GPS locator in your iPhone to track down a public restroom while you’re on the go…and have to go. This app will work well in U.S. cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Jose, Seattle, and Washington D.C., but developers have promised an expansion is on its way. Soon, you will all be free to pee…in a public restroom…on your next road trip.
iExit Walmart Overnight Parking Locator
Price: $1.99

So apparently the good ol’ Sam Walton, aka the master of Walmart, vowed to lend a hand to RV drivers across the country by allowing them to park overnight for one evening in a Walmart parking lot they came across to get some rest before heading out the next day. This app caters to such RV-wielding folks by tracking down Walmarts across the country that they can park in, and also which ones have fueling stations for them to use. We suppose spring break is coming up rather quickly…nice timing, app developers!
ABC Interpreter
Price: $99.99

We know what you’re thinking: “A hundred bucks for an app? Seriously?” But for some people, mainly avid travelers and/or business folk, this app might really be worth the investment. The ABC Interpreter literally interprets and speaks for you in a language of choice (14 languages to choose from). There are dozens of built-in commands and prompts, such as “Can you help me?” or “I’m a tourist,” and the app will speak these commands in the language you choose. The iPhone frankly seems like the perfect device for this type of communication, and maybe this app will open the door for more like it to come along…and severely slash the price of it, as well.
