Apps of the Week, February 19th, 2010

In this edition of Apps of the Week, we sound off with both Conan and the Jersey Shore cast, collect monthly recipes from Martha Stewart, dutifully pay our tithes, and get the details on how much our music library on our iPhones would weigh if it were in the form of cassette tapes.

Conan Says Soundboard

Conan Says Soundboard

We mentioned this app in our list of 10 Apps of TV Junkies the other day when it was brand-spanking new, because, well, we just couldn’t help ourselves. This is a simple soundboard with sound bytes from Conan’s late night shows that you can select individually or at random by tapping Conan’s bobbing caricature head. A few other soundboards are available from the same developer, like Jim Carrey or Adam Sandler, but Conan probably reigns supreme. It’s worth the buck, trust us. If only for the “Conando!” sound byte.

In other soundboard news, now you can get your fix of the Jersey Shore cast with an app soundboard chock full of some of the most beloved lines from your favorite Jersey (well, not really, but we can pretend) kids. The Situation, Snooki, and Pauly D each have their own sections in the app, as well some as choice “extras.” Some noted selections:

“You can hate on me all you want to, but what could you possibly say to someone who pretty much looks like Rambo with his shirt off?” -The Situation

“What kind of person gets a friggin’ duck phone to tawk on?” -Snooki

“I might go bang a Gatorade bottle for…[inaudible/unintelligible] -One of the Guidos

Lent has begun, and Easter is rapidly approaching. Perhaps this app has been in the works for a bit, but we’re guessing the developers thought now would be an opportune time to release this app that eases the process of paying your tithe to the Catholic Church. It’s safe and secure when you create an account, and you can easily find your church through the app to ensure your tithe is recognized. Let’s just hope a lot of Catholics didn’t give up their iPhones or app purchases for Lent, eh?

PetFinder.com Mobile Application

Finally, an app that lets you look at endless pictures of puppies. Well, there are definitely a bunch of those out there, actually, but this one might actually do some good in getting good homes for some lucky pups. PetFinder.com is a popular site for those looking to adopt a pet to peruse through and find adoptable pets in their area. So an iPhone app seems appropriate and almost necessary for those looking to adopt, or even just those who need some cheering up at the end of the work day during their commute home.

OPI

Price: FREE

OPI

Warning: Girly app summary ahead. This app is entirely centered around nail polish, believe it or not. It’s simple, in that its only feature is a stagnant hand (that can change skin tones, mind you) with changeable nail polish colors on it. But did we mention there are more than 200 nail polish colors you can wheel through? OPI is a popular nail polish brand, and this is basically an app for fans who want to check out all the colors of the OPI nail polish rainbow. Full disclosure: I’m a girl, I like nail polish, and I’m pretty into this app. Give it a chance!

Martha’s Everyday Food: Fresh and Easy Recipes

Price: $0.99

Martha's Everyday Food: Fresh & Easy Recipes

Most magazines now have their own iPhone apps, but this one takes the cake (pun intended) for interactivity and some “Well, duh” concepts. Martha Stewart’s Everyday Food is a magazine about…food. This app takes the magazine’s content (mostly recipes) a step further with this app by easily allowing the user to add the necessary ingredients for a recipe into a shopping list through the app. The app will also update each month with content from the new magazine, so you’ll have some sweet new recipes to check out regularly. It’s a good thing.

Lyric Search

Price: FREE

Lyric Search

We’ve all been there: You’re listening to a great tune on your iPhone, but you can’t quite make out the lyrics in that one part of the song. You impatiently wait for Safari to load so you can Google the name of the song, which just happens to be the longest name in the world that you seem to be having trouble typing correctly. You wait even longer for the search results to load…well, you get the point. This app skips all of the nonsense by automatically detecting the song you’re listening to on your iPhone, searching Google for the lyrics for you, then showing you the search results for you to pick from. Voila! And we must mention that it’s inconceivable fast, as well. Now you’ll never sing “Monkey Hatchet” when the lyrics are “Does he have it?” again. (joke courtesy Ellen Degeneres)

Meebo

Price: FREE

Meebo

Without giving too much away, as we’ll be giving you a full review of this IM client very soon, the new Meebo app is fairly groundbreaking for an all-inclusive IM app for a few reasons. No. 1: It allows you to combine IM services from more than 100 different accounts into this one app, in an extremely efficient manner. No. 2: It’s free. (There are other apps like Meebo available, but most cost around or more than $5 and really don’t work all that well.) And that’s all you’re getting for now, folks. Check back for our full review of the app!

Facebook my Music

Price: $.99

Facebook My Music

This really is the era of Facebook (did you know it’s the second most-visited site on the Internet behind Google.com?). “Facebook” is even considered a verb these days, so we like the idea that you can “Facebook” your music, meaning, by this app’s standards, collect statistics of your music library and listens from your iPhone. See what your peak listening time of the day is, what the average length of songs you listen to is, how much your library costs, what the weight of your music in tapes is, and what the most common word in your songs is. Post the stats to your Facebook (duh) and compare with your friends. We’re inclined to say we “like” this.
