Apple To Start Streaming iTunes?
The WSJ is reporting that Apple’s purchase of Lala was to allow a shift in iTunes to a streaming music provider. The article suggests that Apple is looking to shift to allow purchased music to be streamed from the cloud, removing the necessity of using up storage space for the music.
This misses one fundamental point in people’s iTunes libraries, it seems. Namely, that a huge chunk of their music probably wasn’t purchased from the iTunes store. They got it from CD Baby, or Amazon, or an artist’s website, or a friend, or from CD, or maybe they even pirated it. But if this new distribution method only allows you to stream music you purchased from Apple, then 95% of my music will still have to be physically present on my computer or iPod.
