Apple has a history of patenting every possible variation on a concept, so whether this will ever see the light of day is entire impossible to judge. However, Apple have just filed patent on a stylus based tablet, which we hope means that the Apple Tablet is in the near future. The patent is based around the interface, rather than device itself, as the emphasis is on getting the tablet to understand words written via the stylus more easily. It seems to be a variation Ink, the app that handles input from Wacom tablet or something similar, except modified to understand words instead of just letters. The patent flowcharts seem to hint that it would also be able to accept input from a mouse or keyboard, which makes a fair amount of sense, as you could then convert it into a laptop just by plugging in the peripherals.
