Analyst Eightball: Amazon’s Ebook Market Share Down To 35% By 2015
Today’s eightballer is Credit Suisse analyst Spencer Wang, who thinks Amazon is going to struggle in the future. He believes Amazon’s overall market share—physical plus digital—will grow from 19% last year to 28% in 2015; but that it will lose substantially on the digital front. From last years 90% market share, he predicts it will plummet to 35% by 2015. However, the market itself will grow substantially over that period, as ebooks enter the mainstream, with Wang suggesting it would increase to $775 million from $248 million that it’s at today.
It’s no secret that ebooks have come into their own last year and this, with ebook readers (both e-ink and otherwise) becoming increasingly available and affordable. Given Amazon’s ultra-draconian DRM with the Kindle, they’re forcing non-Kindle users to go elsewhere for their purchases. Combine that with Apple’s impending iBooks platform, there’s a lot of competition for this expanding market.
