Analyst Eightball: Apple To Make Own Search Engine
Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray, we love you, but this? This is kinda BS. Jeffrey wrote a letter to investors, saying that Apple will build a search engine to go against Google. He said:
We believe Apple could utilize data unavailable to Google, data generated by the company’s App Store, to create a mobile centric search engine, which would be a unique offering to Google’s search engine.
An iPhone specific search engine could be a difficult undertaking, but we feel Apple could make a minor acquisition of a search company that has built a web index, like a Cuil, and utilize the index as the base for building its own engine.
We believe the odds of Apple developing a search engine in the next five years are 70%. One hurdle for Apple in developing its own search engine would be generating enough advertiser interest to form a competitive marketplace; however, we believe the rationale for an Apple search product is to protect data rather than generate profit.
Let me put it this way: Cuil was so bad, it started an internet meme based on how bad its search results were. Bing is better, but still nobody uses it, even though its combined with Yahoo right now. Munster says this fight is about protecting data, but I’m really not seeing it. Apple market is captive for the iPhone/iPad, but it still isn’t enough to make a sustainable market.

Seton Hill University Gives All Students iPad, Makes Me Consider Enrollment
Dang, just…dang. According to TUAW, Seton Hill University in Greensburg, Pennsylvania has announced that for Fall 2010 year, every full time student will be given an iPad as part of their Technology Advantage Program, saying ”students will be able to download their textbooks to their iPads from the iBook Store. In addition, iPads can be used as phones and for air and file sharing, as well as note-taking.” Apparently first-years are also given a 13-inch MacBook for more intense work.
I’m sure the cost of all this is just folded into the fees, but that’s still a pretty sweet deal for the small, Catholic, liberal arts University with enrollment of 2100 students. Maybe it’s time to go in for a PhD…
iPad Canadian Launch On April 24?
iPad in Canada are saying that the device might be landing on their northern shores on the 24th of April. Apparently that day is marked as a “black out” day, where staff can’t take time off:
We were contacted by a source with close ties to the Apple Store that the weekend of April 24th has been marked as a “black out period” for staff. This means no employees are allowed to book this day off. If that’s the case, then it would make sense that this indeed would be the launch date for the iPad in Canada. Anytime there’s a “black out period” you know it’s for something big.
Apple promised a “late April” international introduction for the iPad, which fits with the 24th date, so it might hit other nations as well. Any Apple UK employees want to verify that for us?
If you’re in the USA, and want to win an iPad, today is the last day to enter our competition! Get cracking, folks!
